Oracle is the favorite to become TikTok's new owner in the US.
TikTok is on its way to changing hands in the United States . And everything points to the fact that the technology company Oracle , in charge of offering data storage services to the Chinese app since 2022, will play a key role in the technology company's survival in the country. According to American media, including ' CBS ', the Austin-based firm, in collaboration with other investors, is the best positioned to take control of the new TikTok that will emerge in the North American country. At least as long as the pending negotiation between Donald Trump and the Chinese president, Xi Jinping , scheduled for this Friday, come to a successful conclusion.
Since TikTok began to face risk in the United States in 2020, Oracle has been among the leading candidates to take control of the service. And that didn't change in January 2025, when the US Supreme Court greenlit the law requiring Congress to force the app to choose between finding new owners or disappearing throughout the country. Trump himself acknowledged, shortly after returning to the White House, that he would have no problem with Oracle taking ownership of the app. The leader maintains a close relationship with Larry Ellison , the richest man in the world for a few hours last week and co-founder of the Texas technology company. Since the announcement of the preliminary agreement reached between the US and China, the company's shares have risen more than 5% .
The names of the other investors who would join Oracle are currently unknown, but media outlets such as Reuters have indicated that investment firms Susquehanna International Group, General Atlantic, and KKR—which are already shareholders in the service—would be part of the group of new owners. This group would include new investors such as the private equity firm Silver Lake , according to CBS. It is not ruled out that China's ByteDance, the app's parent company, could maintain a stake, though it will never be a majority stake, as prohibited by US law. In principle, Oracle would be responsible for ensuring the security of US users' data by ensuring its storage.
ABC has contacted Oracle to inquire about the company's current interest in TikTok. Internal sources have declined to comment ; the same has been said when the Chinese app was contacted.
Although the agreement reached between China and the United States is secret, it has been revealed that the US version of TikTok will be able to use the same algorithm as the global version, which decides which videos appear on each user's screen to keep their attention as long as possible. This was stated on Monday by Wang Jingtao, deputy director of China's Central Cyberspace Affairs Commission. This will potentially make the app more attractive to potential buyers.
Among those who have expressed interest in acquiring the app in recent months is Mr. Beast , the most popular YouTube creator with 436 million followers on his main channel. He announced last January that he had made a formal offer with other partners to acquire control of the app, although he has not shared further details.
Amazon also made an offer last spring to acquire full control of the Chinese platform, but it was considered too low at the time. Likewise, Donald Trump indicated last January that Microsoft had expressed interest in acquiring TikTok. That same month, several media outlets suggested that the Redmond-based technology company could join forces with Oracle to acquire ownership.
