The 'VEGA' app is launched in Vigo, recognizing situations of risk of gender-based violence in real time.

The 'VEGA' app is launched in Vigo, recognizing situations of risk of gender-based violence in real time.

The Vigo Free Trade Zone headquarters hosted the launch of the "Vega" app this Wednesday, a technological tool developed by four entrepreneurs— two local police officers from the city and two technology investors based in Switzerland —that identifies situations of risk of gender-based violence in real time, facilitates police response, and enables the collection of recordings and communications.

One of the founding partners of 'VEGA', Rubén Gardón, explained to El Economista that it is a software that aims to revolutionize the protection of victims, and that uses artificial intelligence to identify risk patterns in the conversational environment, without requiring the victim to interact directly with the device in critical situations .

The project is in an advanced pilot testing phase and has sparked interest from public institutions, law enforcement agencies, and organizations specializing in victim assistance. Its goal is to minimize police response times , facilitate the collection of evidence, and empower victims.

In this regard, this local police officer from the city of Vigo admitted that "we know firsthand the limitations of the current system," and thus emphasized that "Vega is not just a technological product, but rather a tool born from real experience and with a human and preventative approach ."

Two phases

Vega is structured into a preventive phase, offering immediate informational assistance, consultations with automatic responses, and discreet communication with authorities (it can be installed on cell phones or watches without leaving a visible trace and requires no protection orders or prior paperwork to be used); and a reactive phase. In this phase, the app is automatically activated in risky situations , even when the victim suffers tonic immobility, a phenomenon that prevents them from screaming or moving due to extreme fear.

In the event of an attack , Vega opens the device's microphone, transmits the GPS location, and records the surroundings in real time. This information is sent to an Alarm Receiving Center (ARC); this generates a secure digital file that facilitates reporting and preserves valid evidence for legal proceedings.

The promoters of this technology have explained that it not only aims to provide assistance at the moment of assault, but also to create a support ecosystem that restores women's dignity and safety . Its accessible design and simple implementation make it compatible with different legal contexts and social realities.
