We all have one at home and it is actually the worst enemy of your WiFi: it steals your Internet connection.

Although a Wi-Fi connection is intangible, the physical objects around it affect it and impair its performance in terms of the strength and speed of your connection.

We start from the surprisingly little-known premise that the WiFi router should always be placed in a high, open space because electromagnetic waves, which transmit data wirelessly, can collide with or be weakened by certain elements in our homes.

While the objects, furniture, and appliances we find in a home may vary depending on the person or location, it cannot be denied that, generally speaking, there are some common features in every home. These have a clear purpose, and often have to go in a specific place and are immovable, but others do give us a little more freedom.

And luckily, the object in our home that we could call "your Wi-Fi's worst enemy" is one of those movable objects. As experts point out, if you have a mirror in front of your router, it's best to move it if you want stronger, faster Wi-Fi.

This is because mirrors have a metallic layer that reflects electromagnetic waves and prevents them from passing through. Therefore , instead of expanding and reaching the rest of the corners of your house with the same power, the WiFi bounces and "returns" to the router.

Other objects harmful to WiFi

In addition to mirrors, which contain a metallic coating that reflects and absorbs Wi-Fi waves, there are many other objects and materials that can be detrimental to the signal. Here are some of the most common examples in the home:

  • Microwaves : These emit electromagnetic waves at the same frequency as many Wi-Fi routers (2.4 GHz), which causes direct interference and can drastically reduce speed.
  • Bluetooth devices : Although they usually have a shorter range, if they are too close to the router or the device you are using, they can cause interference, since they also operate in the 2.4 GHz band.
  • Baby monitors and wireless security cameras : for the same reason as above.
  • Aquariums : Water absorbs radio waves. Therefore, objects with large amounts of water, such as an aquarium, could cause connection problems.
