What is the latest version of Android and what's new?

The latest version of the Android operating system is version 16. As with every update, Google adds new features to improve security, performance, compatibility, and more.

One of the most notable new features is live updates for tracking services like rides and deliveries. Initially, it will be available only for Google Pixel devices, from the Pixel 6 to the Pixel 9a. Other manufacturers like Samsung, Xiaomi, and OPPO will receive the update later. However, the date is still unconfirmed.

New features in Android 16: Optimized and updated notifications

"Instead of opening the delivery app every 5 minutes, live updates keep you informed in real time," describes the Google Blog. This optimized notifications feature will be especially useful for compatible ride-sharing and food delivery apps .

Additionally, Google assures that notifications from the same app will soon be grouped "to reduce information overload" and to make "everything look organized."

Advanced protection

Android 16 incorporates robust security features aimed at protecting your device from online attacks, malicious apps, unsafe websites, fraudulent calls, and more. It's aimed at both public figures who handle confidential or sensitive information and those who prioritize security.

Improvements to hearing aid compatibility

The new operating system offers significant improvements for people who use hearing aids. The update makes it possible to use the phone's microphone for clearer calls, according to the Google Blog. Another addition allows you to control functions such as hearing aid volume directly from your Android phone.

Design optimized for tablets

"In Android 16, we worked closely with Samsung to develop desktop windows, a new way to interact with apps and content on large-screen devices," Google explains. With the update, you'll be able to " open, move, and resize multiple app windows on a single screen , just like on a desktop."
