Your Streaming Bill Is Going to Explode: This Is What You'll Pay for Netflix and Disney+

Your Streaming Bill Is Going to Explode: This Is What You'll Pay for Netflix and Disney+

The dream of low-cost entertainment is over. Netflix, Disney+, and other streaming platforms are adjusting their rates in Mexico by 2025. We analyze the impact on your wallet and tell you exactly how much more you'll pay each month.

The golden age of streaming, characterized by nearly unlimited catalogs at bargain prices, is coming to an end. Leading digital entertainment platforms in Mexico, such as Netflix, Disney+, and Amazon Prime Video, have announced significant price adjustments for 2025, marking a shift in strategy in the industry: the focus is no longer on attracting subscribers at any cost, but on profitability.

This adjustment will directly impact the monthly budgets of millions of households. Below, we break down the new prices, platform by platform, so you can make informed decisions about your subscriptions.

Netflix

The pioneering platform is one of those showing the most notable increase across all its plans, after several years without any changes.

  • Standard Plan with ads: Increases from 99 to 119 pesos per month (a 20% increase).
  • Standard Plan: Increases from 219 to 249 pesos per month (a 13.7% increase). It offers ad-free HD content and the option to add an extra member for 69 pesos more.
  • Premium Plan: Increases from 299 to 329 pesos per month (a 10% increase). Allows playback in Ultra HD and up to four simultaneous devices.

Disney+

Disney's platform, which integrates Star+ content, has also significantly adjusted its rates.

  • Standard Plan: Its monthly cost is 219 pesos. It includes the full catalog of Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, Star+, and the ESPN and ESPN3 sports channels in HD quality for two devices.
  • Premium Plan: The monthly price is 299 pesos. The main differences are 4K/HDR quality, Dolby Atmos audio, and access on four simultaneous devices.
  • Extra member: To share the account with someone who does not live in the same household, the additional cost is 131 pesos.

Amazon Prime Video

Amazon maintains a more aggressive pricing strategy, but introduces a key differentiation.

  • Plan with ads: Remains at 99 pesos per month.
  • Ad-free plan: The cost to remove ads is an additional 50 pesos, bringing the monthly fee to 149 pesos.

Max (formerly HBO Max)

For now, Max is the only major platform that hasn't announced a price increase for 2025 in Mexico, maintaining its current rates.

  • Basic with ads: 149 pesos per month.
  • Standard: 199 pesos per month.
  • Platinum: 249 pesos per month.

"These adjustments will begin in January, and they will likely impact your portfolio if you have more than one streaming platform."

This widespread price increase is not a coincidence, but the result of a fundamental shift in the streaming business model. The main reasons are:

  • End of the Growth War: For years, companies invested billions to attract subscribers, operating at a loss. Now that the market is mature, the goal is profitability.
  • Production Costs: Creating high-quality series and films is extremely expensive. Price increases are used to fund new, exclusive productions that retain audiences.
  • Combating Shared Accounts: Platforms like Netflix and Disney+ have implemented measures to limit the use of shared passwords between different households, forcing more users to sign up for their own subscriptions or pay extra.
  • Market Stratification: The introduction of cheaper ad-supported plans allows platforms to generate revenue through two channels: subscriptions and advertising, creating a model similar to that of traditional cable television.

We are witnessing the birth of "Cable 2.0." Users who abandoned expensive pay-TV packages for the flexibility and low cost of streaming now face a new reality: the sum of multiple subscriptions can equal or even exceed what they were paying before. The era of unlimited, affordable entertainment has given way to an era of strategic choices for consumers' wallets.
