A 'Blood Moon': Stunning Images of the Total Lunar Eclipse from Around the World

A 'Blood Moon': Stunning Images of the Total Lunar Eclipse from Around the World
On the evening of Sunday, September 7, a splendid red-tinted moon was observed in several countries around the world, leaving behind superb photos of its passage.

Many observers were lucky enough to see a "blood moon" this Sunday evening, September 7, during a total lunar eclipse. While this is the second such moon since the beginning of the year, the spectacle delighted many.

A total lunar eclipse occurs due to the interplay of motion between the planets and moons. The Earth must pass between the Moon and the Sun, casting its shadow on the lunar surface. At this moment, the Moon takes on a reddish hue for approximately 82 minutes.

Despite a few clouds, some French people were able to contemplate the night star this Sunday evening. From Moselle to Marseille, weather photographers were able to capture some superb shots.

The satellite was also observed over the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region, and in the skies over Auvergne. In France, the phenomenon was most visible at 8:11 p.m., according to the Institute of Celestial Mechanics and Ephemeris Calculation.

During that evening, the blood moon was particularly visible from Europe. Despite the war, Ukrainians were also able to witness this phenomenon.

From some angles, the blood moon could have been mistaken for a balloon held by the statue of the Greek goddess Irene in downtown Athens.

In eastern Germany, in Leipzig, walkers were also able to witness this beautiful spectacle in parks where the view was clear.

Elsewhere in the world, the photos captured sometimes look unreal. This is the case, for example, in Asia, in Antalya (Türkiye), where the moon was hidden between the columns of the historic Temple of Apollo.

The same feeling was felt among the crowd in Shanghai, stunned by this beautiful spectacle on the Bund promenade, near the Huangpu River.

For those who were not lucky enough to gaze at the sky on Sunday evening, a major eclipse, this time solar, is expected on August 12, 2026. This total eclipse of the Sun will be the first in Europe since 2006 and will be fully visible in Spain and Iceland, and partially in other countries.
