Apple reportedly chose Google for Siri's AI functions

Apple reportedly chose Google for Siri's AI functions

Apple will rely on Google Gemini's artificial intelligence to power the new AI features of Siri, its digital assistant due out in 2026. Bloomberg reports, according to the newspaper's source, that Apple will pay Big G around $1 billion a year for access to a customized version of the chatbot.

The same outlet reported in June that Apple was discussing separate discussions with OpenAI and Anthropic to explore the possibility of integrating ChatGpt or Claude chatbots more deeply into the iPhone, iPad, and Mac operating systems. "But after testing Gemini, Apple turned its attention to Google," Bloomberg writes.

The project to adapt Siri with a third-party model is being led by Vision Pro headset creator Mike Rockwell and Apple's head of software engineering Craig Federighi. The new voice assistant, expected to launch with the iOS 26.4 update, is codenamed 'Linwood'.

Apple currently relies on ChatGpt to answer some questions users ask Siri.

"Under the agreement, Google's Gemini model will handle Siri's summary and scheduling functions, the components that help the voice assistant synthesize information and decide how to perform complex tasks," Bloomberg continues. "Some features will continue to use Apple's internal models, ensuring that user data remains isolated from Google's infrastructure."
