Personalized, universal, omnipresent. Google today is relaunching a mission that unites many of the big names in artificial intelligence, OpenAI first and foremost: they want to make it our personal and universal assistant at the same time, for everyday life, work. With more intelligence, more functions, more autonomy, greater understanding of our needs. Today's announcements at Google I/O (its well-known conference dedicated to developers) are all-round on AI and partly mirror what other big names are doing (see increasingly sophisticated reasoning models). Google is putting a greater push on agents, on multimodality and videos, and the promise of integration with the search engine and other services.

Some of the more advanced stuff – like the video generator, now with sound, Veo 3, and the arrival of Gemini on Chrome – are reserved for those who subscribe to the new AI Ultra plan at $249.99 per month (similar to Chatgpt Pro). In any case, for now only in the US.

Gemini 2.5 has announced many improvements. Flash is now the default mode.

Native audio output arrives for more natural conversation and advanced security measures. Gemini 2.5 Pro will be enhanced – Google announces – with Deep Think, an experimental advanced reasoning mode for very complex mathematical and programming operations.

Flash 2.5 is the most reliable and efficient model, designed for speed and low cost, and has now been improved in almost every way. It has improved on key benchmarks for reasoning, multimodality, programming, and long context while becoming even more efficient, using 20-30% fewer tokens.

The 2.5 Pro is instead indicated by Google as a leader in some rankings, such as the WebDev Arena programming ranking and the LMArena ranking. In addition, 2.5 Pro is now also Google's leading model for learning. "In head-to-head comparisons that evaluate pedagogy and effectiveness, educators and experts preferred Gemini 2.5 Pro," Google announces.

“Our ultimate vision is to transform the Gemini app into a universal AI assistant that takes care of everyday tasks for us, handles tedious administrative tasks, and makes delightful new recommendations – making us more productive and enriching our lives,” Google announced.

This objective will have to pass through numerous research developments, now in a prototype stage, under the names of Project Mariner and Project Astra .

Project Mariner now includes a system of agents that can perform up to ten tasks at once. These agents can help you search for information, make reservations, make purchases, conduct research, and more — all at the same time. The updated version of Project Mariner is available to Google AI Ultra subscribers in the United States.

Google is also integrating Project Astra Live functionality into Search in the US, so you can interact with Search in real time about what you see using your camera. “Stuck on a project? Just tap the ‘Live’ icon in AI Mode, point your camera, ask your question, and get an explanation, with links to other resources you can explore in more detail,” Google explains.

At the same time, Google is making AI more personalized. “With your permission, it will integrate with Google services like Maps, Calendar, Tasks, and Keep (and more to come) for more in-depth day-to-day assistance,” he explains. This trend of personalization based on our data also concerns OpenAI, Meta, Microsoft. Google has the ability to use what we do on those famous services.

Google today introduced Veo 3 and Imagen 4, its models for generating video and images. Veo 3 not only improves on the quality of Veo 2, but can also, for the first time, create video with sound: background traffic on a city street, birds singing in a park, even people talking.

Imagen 4 can create images in a wide range of aspect ratios and up to 2k resolution, for printing or presentations. Spelling and typography have been significantly improved, making it easier to create greeting cards, posters and even comics. An evolution that OpenAI has already achieved with Gpt4.

Also coming is Flow, our new AI-powered filmmaking tool, to create narrative elements (cast, locations, objects, styles) with natural language, all in one place.

AI Overview is one of the most successful launches in Google Search in the past decade, the company said today. “In our key markets, like the U.S. and India, AI Overview is helping Google usage grow by more than 10% for the types of queries that trigger this feature.”

So Google moves forward. Today it extends AI Mode to all US users (no more registration required).

“AI Mode is where we’ll first introduce the most advanced capabilities of Gemini, and it’s also a glimpse into what’s to come. As we get feedback, many features and capabilities will move from AI Mode directly into the core Search experience. Starting this week, we’ll be introducing a customized version of Gemini 2.5, both in Search for AI Mode and AI Overview in the U.S.”

“For questions that require an even more comprehensive answer, we’re introducing in-depth search capabilities in AI Mode with Deep Search.”

It also introduces “live” features (“with Search Live you can converse with Search about what you see in real time, using the camera”) and Mariner agents in the Ai Mode search.

Ai Mode will become more personalized, with our contextual information, and will have a shopping mode. “See how an item fits you and ask our agentic checkout feature to make the purchase when the price is right.”

The ambition, with Google's specific tools and prerogatives, is that: AI as a totally universal tool for each of us. After all, there is no other way to repay the billion-dollar investments. The other big techs are also making them, however, and have similar ambitions. In the end, perhaps only one will prevail - how many universal AIs are there in our lives, after all? Right now the landscape is confusing. But the big ones, as the AI market matures, will have to find better ways to differentiate themselves from each other.
