Gertz and Harfuch defend Rafael Ojeda after his nephew-in-law's arrest for fuel theft.

MEXICO CITY (apro).- Following the revelation that a nephew of former Navy Secretary Rafael Ojeda is part of a fuel theft ring, Attorney General Alejandro Gertz Manero said that Ojeda himself had requested an investigation into all Mexican Navy personnel two years ago.
In a press conference, the prosecutor explained that the former head of the Navy during the Andrés Manuel López Obrador administration had visited the Attorney General's Office to request an investigation and detail the problems he was aware of.
It was after that visit, he added, that investigations were opened that led to the recent arrest of 14 businessmen and public officials allegedly involved in the illicit fuel market.
Among them is Vice Admiral Manuel Roberto Farías Laguna, nephew of the former Secretary of State.
"We were obtaining a huge amount of information about behavior that went beyond the institution's proper function," said Gertz Manero, noting that Rafael Ojeda never reported any family ties to any of those accused.
"It made no distinction or protection for anyone," he said.

The prosecutor announced that there are still arrest warrants to be served, although he declined to name any names. He did emphasize that all those under investigation are part of a vast fuel theft network.
For his part, the Secretary of Security and Citizen Protection, Omar García Harfuch, defended Admiral Ojeda's career.

"I would like to highlight the important work carried out by Admiral Rafael Ojeda during his administration, who did an extraordinary job strengthening this institution. The isolated actions of a few do not represent the actions of this honorable institution," he stated.
