What is the most reliable car brand in 2025? Consumer Reports reveals this.

What is the most reliable car brand in 2025? Consumer Reports reveals this.

Consumer Reports has released its 2025 annual auto reliability report , based on surveys of more than 300,000 owners. This assessment has become a key tool for those planning to purchase a new vehicle, as it provides a clear picture of which brands have fewer mechanical failures, require less maintenance, and guarantee a better driving experience.

According to the study, Japanese brands once again dominate the top spots. Subaru tops the list with a 68% reliability rating , followed by Lexus (65%) and Toyota (62%) . These results confirm a sustained trend of reliability for these companies, backed by decades of mechanical innovation and attention to detail in their manufacturing processes.

In the words of Consumer Reports analyst Steven Elek, “ Subaru cars share many reliable components .” The one exception was the Subaru Solterra EV , an electric version based on the Toyota bZ4X, which scored below average.

For its part, Lexus maintains its reputation as a premium brand with four above-average models, and Toyota , despite the transition to more electrified vehicles, maintains a solid foundation of trust among users.

In fourth place is Honda , with a reliability rating of 59%. Although only three of its models exceeded the average, seven were in the average range, reflecting a consistency acceptable to consumers.

Honda's luxury division, Acura , ranks fifth with 55%, also with a balance between outstanding and average models. Both brands reinforce the perception that Japanese cars remain a safe bet for those who prioritize durability and low maintenance costs.

In terms of vehicle types, conventional hybrid cars remain the most reliable option , surpassing pure electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids (PHEVs). The latter, although improved, report 70% more failures than combustion models, while EVs have 42% more problems.

At the other end of the ranking, Rivian ranks as the least reliable brand of 2025 , with just 14%. The electric vehicle company faces technical challenges it has yet to overcome. Still, 86% of its owners said they would buy a Rivian car again , reflecting a disconnect between technical reliability and customer satisfaction .

Tesla , while also among the six worst-performing brands, retains strong customer loyalty: 72% say they would buy again. This shows how factors like design, technology, and driving experience can influence overall perception, even when mechanical issues are present.

Consumer Reports also ranks reliability by vehicle type . Sedans, hatchbacks, and station wagons lead the way with an average score of 60 out of 100. Minivans follow with a score of 57, while SUVs and pickups, despite their popularity, have lower reliability.

Jake Fisher, director of automotive testing at Consumer Reports, reaffirms, “ As a category, sedans remain very reliable ,” cementing their place as a smart choice for those seeking a balance of functionality, cost, and durability.

Consumer Reports ' 2025 report confirms that, despite the growth of electric brands, reliability remains dominated by traditional Japanese brands . Subaru, Lexus, and Toyota not only offer long-lasting cars, but also a lower likelihood of serious mechanical problems.

However, the study also makes it clear that consumer loyalty goes beyond technical failures . Brands like Tesla and Rivian, despite their low reliability scores, enjoy a loyal following, suggesting that innovation, design, and emotional experience also play a key role in vehicle choice.

For those looking for a reliable car in 2025, opting for brands with a proven track record remains the best choice . But if you value technology or status more, the balance between reliability and experience will become increasingly personal.
