Sergei Belyakov, an employee of the Ivanovo Stone Museum, commented for MK on the report of the Solar Astronomy Laboratory of the IKI RAS and the ISTP SB RAS that since the middle of yesterday, the Sun has been experiencing a rapid increase in the number and area of active centers. In less than two days, the Sun has seen 17 flares, which is three times higher than the average for July.
"The increased frequency of solar flares is associated with the passage of the next maximum of solar activity," said Belyakov.
He explained that the activity cycle is about 11 years and at the maximum a large number of coronal holes, flares, and coronal mass ejections occur.
"Often these streams of charged particles reach the Earth, interact with the Earth's magnetic field and cause polar lights," the specialist noted.
Belyakov added that manifestations of solar activity can cause interruptions in communications, affect electrical equipment and even terrestrial phenomena. At its maximum, the number of natural and man-made accidents and disasters increases.
