6G communication networks are expected to be operational by the 2030s. However, such advance studies are critical for these technologies to mature.
MINIATURE SIZE, GIANT PERFORMANCE
The new chip measures just 11 millimeters by 1.7 millimeters. Despite this, it can operate across a wide frequency range from 0.5 GHz to 115 GHz. While this broad bandwidth would normally require many different components, the researchers have managed to incorporate them into a single design.
The secret to its success lies in the specialized technologies used. The chip contains an electro-optical modulator that converts radio signals into optical signals. In the opposite direction, optoelectronic oscillators are activated to generate ultra-wide radio frequencies. This results in a solution with efficiency unseen in previous prototypes.
TRANSITION FROM 5G TO 6G
5G technology used today can theoretically reach speeds of 10 Gbps. However, in practice, the average speed offered by US providers is between 150 and 300 Mbps. The new chip surpasses these limits and offers insights into the digital world of the future.
According to experts, establishing a 6G infrastructure still requires years of work. Nevertheless, the technology's arrival seems inevitable. Ultra-high-definition (UHD) broadcasts, augmented reality applications, and AI-based services will require the massive data capacity 6G will bring.
