A movie-worthy incident! Doctor served 7 years in prison and was released after being told he was sorry.

Dr. BK, a hand surgeon working in the microsurgery unit of a hospital in Van, was scheduled to travel to Hakkari in 2009, but after an accident left him unable to drive, he asked a relative for help. The vehicle, driven by I.A. and carrying the doctor, was stopped at the entrance to Hakkari. 33 kilograms (270 grams) of drugs were found in the vehicle.
Served 7 Years, 1 Month, and 16 Days in PrisonAccording to Now TV's Alican Uludağ, despite the driver's statement, "The drugs belong to me, the doctor is innocent," the driver, İ.A., and doctor BK were arrested and sent to prison for drug trafficking. Dr. BK failed to convince the court of his innocence and was sentenced to 16 years and 8 months in prison for drug trafficking in 2009.
After the July 15 coup attempt, the prosecutor who led the investigation, the members of the trial court, and the members of the Supreme Court of Appeals who approved the verdict were expelled for alleged ties to FETÖ. Dr. BK's lawyer, Polat Balkan, requested a retrial in 2017.
Dr. BK was released on February 13, 2017. He filed a lawsuit against the state seeking 3 million Turkish Lira in nonpecuniary damages for the 7 years, 1 month, and 16 days he was unjustly imprisoned. The court ruled that Dr. BK be paid 1 million Turkish Lira in nonpecuniary damages for the 2,604 days he was unjustly imprisoned, plus legal interest, starting in 2009.
With this decision, the state will pay approximately 2.5 million TL in compensation to doctor BK, who currently works at Gaziantep City Hospital.
