A technology that seems straight out of a science fiction movie could be the future of disaster relief operations.

Scientists aim to reach people trapped under rubble by using insects that transform into "cyborgs" with mini electronic bags attached to their backs.

These creatures, also called "Zoborg," offer hope in disasters such as earthquakes and mine collapses.

In this system, developed by researchers at their university, a small "bag" containing a microchip is attached to the insects' backs. This chip controls their movements by sending electrical signals to the insect's antennae via electrodes. This allows the researchers to make the insects walk forward or backward, turn, or slow down.

In theory, these cyberbugs could enter places inaccessible to humans or robots thanks to their natural abilities to easily navigate narrow debris fields and climb walls. This would allow them to locate survivors under the rubble much more quickly.

This technology was first field-tested during an earthquake in Myanmar in March. Although the deployed Zoborgs were unable to locate any living creatures, they made significant contributions to mapping the debris field and analyzing risky areas.

Research on "zoborgs" actually dates back to 2006. Tests have shown that the insects can navigate vertical surfaces with a high success rate of 71.2%. One of the biggest advantages of these creatures is that they already possess natural sensors (antennae, eyes, etc.), eliminating the need for additional, complex sensors.

The scientists' ultimate goal is to enable "Zoborgs" to quickly locate disaster victims under the rubble and send a signal to rescue teams, thus revolutionizing rescue operations.
