iPhone 16 vs. iPhone 17 comparison! Is it worth upgrading to the new model?

However, we must admit that things are a bit different for tech enthusiasts. Users who frequently shoot videos and have a passion for technology often make this comparison with every new model. So, should someone using the iPhone 16 upgrade to the iPhone 17? It's worth emphasizing that this change isn't a big deal for the average user. However, for tech enthusiasts, the situation may be a bit different. In this article, we've listed the three reasons that might most encourage users to upgrade.

CAMERA UPGRADE

While this is much more prominent in the Pro models, the fact that all base models have 48MP cameras may still be a reason to switch. While the main lens is very similar on both the 16 and 17, the real difference in the camera department is the secondary lens. This secondary camera, which was 12MP on the iPhone 16, has been increased to 48MP on the 17. This translates to significantly better results in both wide-angle and macro shots.

That difference has grown even wider with the iPhone 17 Pro. Apple says it has "the best iPhone camera ever." There are now three 48MP Fusion cameras on the rear, including a new 48MP telephoto lens with a 56% larger sensor than the previous generation. Apple claims this system gives you "eight professional lenses in your pocket," as you can now switch between 4x optical zoom (100mm) and 8x optical quality zoom (200mm).

Although the reduction of the 5x optical zoom to 4x has received some criticism, the new camera system seems very attractive as it promises sharper and more detailed shots, especially in low light.

The front camera's 18MP resolution is significant. But even more important is its Center Stage support. This not only makes group selfies easier, but also changes how you use the phone.

BATTERY LIFE AND BATTERY PERFORMANCE

Apple claims the iPhone 17 Pro has the longest battery life on iPhone. While the company didn't share exact figures, it did say the device offers 33 hours of video playback. For comparison, the iPhone 16 Pro was advertised as offering 27 hours. The iPhone 16 Pro had a 3582 mAh battery. The 17 Pro's capacity has been increased to 3988 mAh. Looking at the base model, the iPhone 16 and 17, we see a battery increase from 3561 mAh to 3692 mAh.

The real kicker here is that both the A19 Pro chipset and iOS 26 have new power optimizations. This difference might not be huge in normal use, but if you're a heavy user like me, even the smallest difference becomes incredibly valuable.

DESIGN AND COLOR OPTIONS

We can say this with certainty: Design is a top priority for many users. Looking back, we see that Apple has implemented design changes every five years. Many users also replace their phones during these design cycles. So, if design is already important to you, it might not even be worth considering other factors. In short, it's safe to say that design influences most user decisions.

While the iPhone 17 model essentially shares the same design as the previous generation, the main difference here comes in the i7 Air and, of course, the Pro models. While the rear camera island and its placement are the most striking design elements, the company has also made significant changes to the design lines and colors this year. Unlike last year's neutral and understated colors, the Pro model offers much more vibrant options. Cosmic Orange, in particular, is closer to a copper tone than a fluorescent orange and looks truly striking. For those seeking a more subdued alternative, there's a Deep Blue option.

CONCLUSION: IS IT WORTH PASSING?

The iPhone 16 series remains a powerful device, and as I mentioned earlier, it has features that will last most users for years. So, if you're not using the phone's features heavily, we already know it's a good model worth waiting a few more generations. However, if, like me, you use your phone for video work, photography, and want to maximize battery life, the iPhone 17 series offers a serious reason to upgrade, especially the Pro models. The new design is a nice bonus for this upgrade.

If camera and battery life are your top priorities, upgrading to the iPhone 17 Pro certainly makes sense. But if you're happy with your current phone, waiting for the iPhone 17 Pro in the coming years or the rumored 2026 foldable iPhone might be a much more attractive option.
