New regulation in cream and clotted cream production: It will now be produced with a single oil

The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry has published the "Turkish Food Codex Cream and Cream Communiqué" in the Official Gazette, enacting it. This new regulation aims to combat food fraud by redefining the production and labeling of cream and cream products.

According to the new regulation, cream and kaymak products must be made exclusively from cow, sheep, goat, or buffalo milk. Products must not contain any animal or vegetable fat other than milk fat. Furthermore, the addition of proteins other than milk protein is prohibited. These regulations aim to preserve the naturalness of the products and prevent consumer misleading.

Labeling rules have been redefined

The Communiqué brings important changes, especially regarding labeling.

  • The term "cream" cannot be used in similar products: The term "cream" cannot be used on the labels, advertisements and promotions of products produced for other purposes and outside the scope of the circular.

  • Flavorings must be stated: In flavored processed creams, the flavorings used and their percentages must be clearly stated on the front of the label, along with the product name. However, flavorings cannot be added directly to the cream product.

  • Animal species images have been restricted: Only the name and images of the animal can be used on creams and clotted creams made from the milk of a single animal species. Products made by blending the milk of different species will not be allowed to display images of the animal species on their labels; only the names of the species used will be included.

TRANSITION PROCESS AND SANCTIONS

Food businesses have until December 31st to comply with the new regulation. Products produced before this date will remain on the market until the end of their shelf life.
