The era of politics on Facebook and Instagram is ending! Ban date announced
Meta announced that it will stop selling and displaying political ads across the EU starting in October in response to the European Union's (EU) new regulation on political ads.
In a blog post published Friday, the company described the obligations imposed under the Political Advertising Transparency and Targeting Act (TTPA) as “unenforceable.”
Meta, which is affiliated with Facebook and Instagram, said the new regulation creates “intolerable levels of complexity and legal uncertainty” on the company’s systems.
The TTPA, adopted by the European Commission in 2024, requires political ads to be clearly labeled, including sponsor information, the election or referendum the ad relates to, the advertising cost, and the targeting methods used.
Furthermore, while the use of personal data for political ads is only permitted with the individual's explicit consent, the processing of sensitive data such as race, ethnicity or political views for targeting purposes is prohibited.
GOOGLE WILL IMPLEMENT THE SAME DECISIONGoogle made a similar announcement, announcing that it would stop selling political ads in the EU by October. The company emphasized that the law creates "serious operational challenges and legal uncertainty."
It is expected that this type of practice will gradually become widespread throughout the world in the future.
