A Meta spokesperson said Meta has fixed a bug that caused some users to see content that “should not be recommended” in their Instagram Reels feeds.
The move comes after users complained about a sudden wave of recommended content on social media that included violent and sexual imagery.
Meta has apologized and promised to fix a “bug” that caused some Instagram users to report that violent and graphic content was being recommended to their personal pages.
"We're fixing a bug that was causing some users to see content that shouldn't have been recommended in their Instagram Reels feed. We apologize for the error," a Meta spokesperson told CNBC.
The statement comes after a number of Instagram users took to various social media platforms to voice concerns over violent and "not safe for work" content appearing on their feeds recently.
Some users have claimed to see such content even when Instagram 's " Sensitive Content Control" is set to its highest moderation setting.
According to its meta policy, the company works to protect users from disturbing images and removes content that is particularly violent or graphic.
Prohibited content includes videos that "show dismemberment, visible internal organs or burned bodies" as well as content that contains "sadistic expressions of images of human and animal suffering".
However, Meta says it does allow some graphic content if it helps users condemn and raise awareness of important issues, such as human rights violations, armed conflicts, or acts of terrorism. Such content may come with restrictions, such as warning labels.
