  • The governments of the Baltic states accuse Russia of deploying electronic warfare equipment near their borders.
  • In recent months, disruptions have increased significantly, affecting air and sea communications, including the GPS system.
  • Disturbances are particularly severe in north-eastern Poland.

According to Bloomberg, since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the Baltic Sea region has been experiencing massive signal disruptions , including GPS, affecting air and sea communications. Baltic authorities emphasize that the situation has significantly worsened in recent months . The Estonian regulator reports that 85% of domestic flights are currently experiencing disruptions, and the number of intentionally transmitted false coordinates, known as spoofing, is also on the rise.

At stake is not only the security of civilian transport, but also the stability of the region, which has become a flashpoint for NATO in the conflict with the Kremlin.

The Polish Air Navigation Services Agency (PANSA) said in a statement to Bloomberg that the disruptions "significantly increase" the burden on air traffic control because pilots have to switch to radar support due to GPS problems.

PANSA emphasized that disruptions are particularly severe in northeastern Poland, near the border with Lithuania. This area includes the Suwałki Gap, a border less than 100 km long between Belarus and Kaliningrad.

Kaliningrad is widely considered the focal point of Russia's electronic warfare activities.

In their letter to the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), Lithuanian officials identified four locations in the exclave where, they believe, Russia has installed jamming equipment. Some electronic warfare devices may also have been deployed on ships in the Baltic Sea.
