Ghost of Yotei avoids controversy: how Sucker Punch honors Japan

In a context where cultural representations can generate either applause or controversy, Ghost of Yotei stands out as an example of historical respect. While Assassin's Creed Shadows has ignited social media for possible distortions about feudal Japan, Sucker Punch's new project stands out for its collaborative approach with Japanese experts.

Jason Connell and Nate Fox, the studio's creative minds, shared in an interview how the connection with Sony Japan was key during the development of Ghost of Tsushima . "We knew that, as American developers, we needed help to represent Japan well. We asked for it, and we got it," they explain.

During the development of Ghost of Tsushima , the team surrounded themselves with Japanese advisors who guided them through religious rituals, movements, architecture, and attire. "We wanted to achieve a sense of authenticity, not an exact copy of history," they explain. This philosophy continues in Ghost of Yotei , but now with an additional challenge: faithfully representing the indigenous Ainu community.

To do so, they once again turned to Japanese experts who helped shape every aspect of the new title. The premise is simple: if you're going to tell a story inspired by a culture, listen to those who live it first.

While Ubisoft faces criticism for ignoring Japanese voices in Assassin's Creed Shadows , Sucker Punch is doubling down on cultural respect. The contrast is clear: one reinterprets without dialogue, the other listens and collaborates.

This difference has generated strong support on social media, where Japanese fans are already beginning to position Ghost of Yotei as the true spiritual successor to Kurosawa and bushido.

Ghost of Yotei will be released exclusively for PS5 on October 2, 2025. It promises to immerse us in snowy landscapes, conflicts of honor, and a deep-rooted samurai drama. In a market increasingly conscious of cultural representation, Sucker Punch seems to have its sword sharpened.
