Sony removes PS Plus games to make way for new titles

Sony removes PS Plus games to make way for new titles

PlayStation Plus, Sony's flagship subscription service, has for years been a key platform for millions of gamers to enjoy titles at no additional cost. But now, the catalog rotation strategy is causing inconvenience and confusion. Why remove exclusive titles from the brand? Sony has an answer, although not everyone is convinced.

The controversy erupted after a statement by Nick Maguire, PlayStation's global vice president of services, who explained in an interview with Game File that removing titles is part of an effort to keep the offering "fresh" and help players discover new games. However, this argument hasn't calmed those who see iconic titles disappearing from the platform.

According to Maguire, PlayStation Plus manages more than 80 game collections. To keep that experience varied and fresh, there are periodic rotations. This isn't a practice unique to Sony. Xbox Game Pass, its direct competitor, also regularly adds and removes games. But what has sparked the debate is that PlayStation has begun removing games from its own studios.

Titles like Infamous: Second Son , Resistance: Fall of Man , and Resistance 2 have quietly left the catalog. These aren't due to expired licenses, but rather internal company decisions. For many users, the removal of these classics represents a loss in PlayStation's digital legacy.

Amid this "rotation" strategy, Sony is trying to compensate users with powerful new releases. The July 2025 catalog is promising. From July 1st to August 4th, subscribers can play Diablo IV for free, one of the biggest releases of the year. Along with it, The King of Fighters XV and Jusant will arrive, titles with very distinct styles that expand the month's offerings.

Additionally, it is recalled that games such as NBA 2K25 , Alone in the Dark , Bomb Rush Cyberfunk and Destiny 2: The Final Shape will be available until June 30.

The removal of exclusive titles has left many users wondering if PlayStation is losing its identity. Part of the perceived value of PS Plus lay in providing access to great titles from the console's history. The disappearance of games like Infamous —one of PS4's flagship titles—leaves a sense of loss.

While some understand the logic of the renewal, others are calling for better communication from Sony. The feeling of "digital erasure" has even led to discussions about game preservation and the future of digital ownership.

With this new strategy, it's likely that more titles—even exclusive ones—will be phased out. But it could also open up space for new surprises. Perhaps Sony plans to reintroduce these classics with graphical improvements or as part of future "remastered" releases.

For now, the only certainty is that PlayStation Plus has become more dynamic… and also more unpredictable.
