The U.S. State Department warns of anti-gentrification protests this Sunday.

MEXICO CITY (apro).- The U.S. State Department issued an alert to its citizens and diplomatic personnel regarding the protests against gentrification planned for this Sunday, July 20.
In an official statement, the U.S. government stated that the demonstrations will begin at 3:00 p.m. in the Tlalpan municipality, specifically between the Fuentes Brotantes and El Caminero areas.
He warned that these demonstrations could lead to acts of violence or disorder, as occurred in a previous protest on July 4 in the Roma and Condesa neighborhoods.
"Some members of that group vandalized property and threw stones at people perceived as foreigners," the advisory issued by the consular authority also stated.
Therefore, people were asked to avoid the demonstration area because "protests can be unpredictable."
U.S. government personnel accredited in Mexico were instructed not to visit the event's vicinity.
U.S. citizens were also urged not to participate in such gatherings, especially if they could be considered politically motivated by Mexican authorities.
"U.S. citizens are urged not to participate in protests that authorities may consider political in nature, as Mexican law prohibits political activities by foreign citizens, and their participation may result in detention or deportation," the State Department emphasized.
The document also notes potential logistical impacts in the area, such as traffic congestion, an increase in the presence of security personnel, and the implementation of additional surveillance measures.
Actions to take
The U.S. government recommended that its citizens monitor local media for updates and follow all instructions issued by Mexican authorities.
“Follow the instructions of local authorities and, in case of emergency, call 911,” the statement reads.
