Centaur, the AI that claims to simulate the human mind

Researchers claim that the large language model they trained through hundreds of psychology studies is capable of predicting people's decisions. For others, prediction isn't much use. What's needed is an understanding of the human mind... We're not there yet.

“A new artificial intelligence is now able to predict the decisions people make in many situations. And it often does better than the classic theories used in psychology to understand the motivations behind our choices,” begins Nature. in an article intended for the general public.

Details of the AI system called Centaur, developed by a team of researchers from Germany, the United States, and the United Kingdom, were published in this peer-reviewed journal on July 2. Centaur can “predict and simulate human behavior regardless of natural language experience,” the study’s authors write.

To develop this AI – available in open access – the researchers started with a large pre-trained language model from Meta AI, LLaMA, available in open source, which they shaped using the Psych-101 dataset. This is a large set of information from 160 psychology experiments in which 60,000 people made more than 10 million choices spread across several types of tasks.

“The researchers designed this model to predict not only what behavior is generally adopted for a given task, but also any
