In Paris, outreach efforts to the homeless are stepped up during heatwaves. The city's Homeless Assistance Unit was mobilized on Tuesday, July 1st, at the height of the heatwave that hit France. Its agents are distributing water bottles and attempting to direct homeless people to places where they can cool off.

It's a tiny grassy embankment, littered with broken glass and soda cans, wedged against an entrance ramp to Paris's northern ring road. On the early afternoon of Tuesday, July 1st, it's 38°C in the capital. And traffic pollution adds to the extreme heat. This is where several dozen homeless people live. In the crack of a tent, a man can be seen lying down. His T-shirt is soaked, and his face betrays exhaustion.
