This little-known technique lets you know who saved your number on WhatsApp

Finding out who has your number on the app only takes a few seconds.

Have you ever wondered if people are saving your phone number? With modern communication methods, it's fairly easy to get someone's number, even without their knowledge. One of the most well-known methods is WhatsApp, which is teeming with chat groups where anyone can get another member's number without asking permission. During this back-to-school period, the many parents who join WhatsApp groups are the first to be affected...

Knowing who has access to your contact information can be very useful for personal or professional reasons, to protect your peace of mind, or even, in the most extreme cases, your security. While it's difficult to know who has obtained your number, a WhatsApp feature can provide more clues: broadcast lists. This relatively little-known and even less-used tool allows you to send the same message to multiple people without having to create a group chat.

To use this technique, you'll first need an accomplice, or at least a phone number already registered in WhatsApp, whose owner also has your number in their app. This person doesn't necessarily need to know what you're doing, but they'll be very useful for creating a list, since a list must contain at least two contacts.

Start by saving the number of the person you suspect on WhatsApp yourself. To do this, create a new chat and select "create new contact" to add the number in question. Next, you'll need to create a broadcast list. On iPhone, simply tap the + button in the top right corner. On an Android smartphone, simply tap the three small dots in the top right corner of the screen. In both cases, you'll need to select "new broadcast."

Once the list is created, you need to add numbers to it. Start by adding the number of your "accomplice," then the number of the person you suspect. Once you've selected both numbers, send any message to the mailing list. This message can be of any nature you like, but keep in mind that both numbers may read it.

The rest of the process can seem frustrating: you'll then have to wait. It can take up to several hours before you check how the message you sent was received, by long-pressing it to select it before clicking the small "i" that appears at the top, for "information."

If the suspected number hasn't saved your number to their WhatsApp account, the app will show "1 remaining" in the "Read by" list. This actually means that the contact in question simply hasn't received your message and can't receive it because they don't have your number. Our accomplice, here "Mom," on the other hand, did receive the message on their WhatsApp account, but it's listed in "Delivered to," meaning they haven't read it yet.

If both contacts have your number in their WhatsApp account, they will both appear in "Distributed to" or "Read by" with the names you gave them in your contacts. Be careful, however: this technique only works if both people have the read receipt option enabled!
