Weather: 7 departments on orange alert, return to school postponed in Bouches-du-Rhône and Var

Seven departments in the south-east of the country remain on orange alert for thunderstorms until Monday afternoon, and three of them, Vaucluse, Bouches-du-Rhône and Var, due to flood risks, Météo France announced on Monday, September 1st in its latest bulletin.
Bad weather has led to the postponement of the start of the school year until Tuesday in Bouches-du-Rhône and Var in order to "guarantee the safety of students and parents," the prefects indicated in a very rare decision.
In Bouches-du-Rhône, no significant weather-related interventions were reported by firefighters overnight. In Vaucluse, however, the prefecture reported around 100 interventions and some damage, including falling trees causing power outages, with around 1,000 homes without power in Orange and the surrounding area.
The other departments affected by the orange alert for thunderstorms are Isère, Drôme, Hautes-Alpes, and Alpes-de-Haute-Provence. However, this alert level was lifted at 6 a.m. in Lozère, Gard, and Ardèche.

"The Mediterranean episode is in place, with violent storms characterized in particular by very strong rainfall and occasionally violent gusts. These risks will continue until late Monday afternoon/evening," the meteorological institute indicated this morning.
"We could reach 100 to 150 mm over the duration of the episode or even up to 200 mm locally if it remains stationary in the most southern departments," adds Météo France, which also predicts "strong electrical activity, hail and locally very strong gusts of wind."
