Huawei is going after Garmin: its sports smartwatch has 14 days of battery life and a huge screen.

Huawei is going after Garmin: its sports smartwatch has 14 days of battery life and a huge screen.

In the world of sports watches, for years there was only one name that commanded unanimous acclaim: Garmin. It almost seemed like if you didn't wear one, you weren't serious about sports. But technology is advancing at breakneck speed, and the traditional players are no longer alone. The major mobile brands, seeing the potential, have gone all in, and now there are smartwatches capable of challenging them in the sporting arena and surpassing them in the smart arena.

In that club of "new contenders," Huawei has carved out a niche for itself with its GT series, a range that has steadily raised the bar until reaching this year's beast: the Huawei Watch GT 5 .

Huawei Watch GT 5

Not only does it have features that don't pale in comparison to a mid-range Garmin Forerunner , but it's also cheaper, as it doesn't even reach 200 euros in several of its colors, such as black or blue.

The price is hyper-competitive, even in a context where stores are trying by all means to gain a foothold and market share through aggressive discounts.

Health and sport as the best

The GT 5 is the perfect example of how things have turned. It's a watch designed for those who want complete control over their health and workouts, but don't want to compromise on everyday smart features .

In terms of sports, the range of activity modes is almost endless: you can choose from common sports such as running, cycling, swimming, or gym, but also climbing, rowing, skiing, golf, yoga, or even less common indoor workouts.

The watch automatically recognizes multiple activities , so if you forget to start tracking while you're out running or cycling, it automatically picks up the slack and starts recording data without you missing a step.

One of the strong points is the personalized training mode: the GT 5 allows you to configure customized routines, set target heart rate zones, receive real-time alerts and then analyze your performance with highly visual graphics in the Huawei Health app .

The data it collects isn't just the basics: you can track distance, pace, cadence, altitude, elevation gain, calories, and advanced metrics like VO2 max, training load, recovery time, and even stress level measurement. It can continuously monitor oxygen saturation (SpO2) and pulse 24/7 without draining the battery for two days.

When it comes to health features, the Watch GT 5 is loaded: it monitors your sleep in detail, including light, deep, and REM sleep phases, even detecting micro-awakenings and offering personalized advice to improve your rest.

The pulse sensor has been significantly improved compared to previous generations and can identify irregularities such as arrhythmias or unusual spikes during the night. It also records menstrual cycles, daily stress levels, and body energy trends to help you better regulate your daily rhythm.

Two weeks of battery life and many smart features

Battery life is one of the hallmarks of the GT range, and the Model 5 doesn't disappoint: the battery can last up to two weeks with moderate use and around a week in intensive mode, including daily GPS, active notifications, and sleep tracking . This is a joy to forget about the plug, even during weeks with lots of training, trips to the countryside, or long trips.

In the "smart" department, the watch doesn't fall far behind the more traditional smartwatches. The GT 5 displays notifications from absolutely every app on your phone, lets you answer calls thanks to the built-in speaker and microphone, and quickly respond to messages or reject calls directly from your wrist .

You can also pay contactlessly from your watch and control your music without taking your phone out of your pocket, either with playlists saved in internal memory or via remote playback.

Other useful everyday features include remote camera control, reminders, the ability to create smart alarms, a stopwatch, a timer, and time management.
