It's official: the European Union will force mobile phone manufacturers to reveal data they usually hide.

Apple refers to battery life as "the amount of time a device is powered on without needing to be recharged ." "Battery lifespan" is the amount of time the battery lasts until it needs to be replaced. How you use your device affects the battery's lifespan and durability, but no matter how you use your device, there are ways to help."

The European Union has already announced new energy labeling and eco-design requirements , which will be implemented on June 20th of this year and aim to increase the lifespan of mid-range smartphones from 3.0 to 4.1 years. To achieve this, a classification will be created based on energy efficiency, repairability, and durability.

Now, the Institute for Energy Diversification and Saving (IDAE) has informed phone manufacturers of the entry into force of a new regulation that will become mandatory on June 25, 2025 , and which affects information related to long-life batteries.

The new regulations

The new regulation states that all smartphones and tablets sold in the European Union will be required to display information related to battery life, battery life, and energy efficiency . The label on these products must include:

  1. A QR code, which links to the complete product information provided by the supplier;
  2. The trademark;
  3. The vendor's model identifier;
  4. The energy efficiency class scale, from A to G;
  5. The energy efficiency class;
  6. The battery life per cycle (from the moment we remove it from the charger until we plug it back in), in hours and minutes per full battery charge;
  7. The reliability class in repeated free fall (shock resistance);
  8. The class of repairability;
  9. Battery life in cycles;
  10. The IP rating of protection against the penetration of particles and moisture;
  11. The number of the Regulation governing energy labelling, i.e., "2023/1669".

If these requirements are not met, the devices will not be allowed to go on sale. These specifications and relevant information are vitally important for customers, as they can choose one phone or another without fear of a battery that will not be as efficient as expected.
