PRD leaders announce formation of political bloc

MEXICO CITY (apro) .- PRD leaders in eight states across the country announced the formation of the National Political Bloc of Local Parties of the PRD, whose goal is to build "a new political path that takes up social causes, justice and democracy as axes of action, moving away from the practices that in the past fractured the PRD."
The local PRD representatives from Mexico City, Michoacán, Guerrero, Morelos, Tlaxcala, Zacatecas, Hidalgo, and Oaxaca added that they intend to "rebuild the project of the democratic left from the local level, reclaim its origins, and distance themselves from the alliances with the right and the leadership that marked the party's previous era."
Although the PRD lost its national registration in September 2024, following the electoral process, local leaders stated in a joint statement:
“We vindicate ourselves with our history on the left. We embrace with full moral character the legacy of thousands of PRD members who fought for a Mexico of opportunity, democracy, and justice. With this conviction, we reaffirm our responsibility to rebuild the political project of the democratic left from the grassroots level.”
They then highlighted some of the agreements reached within the new political bloc:
- Formal constitution of the national political bloc.
- Generational renewal of leadership.
- Consolidation of local structures.
- Commitment to maintaining a democratic and progressive left-wing ideological identity.
They also clarified that the new bloc "will not participate, for now, in the formation of any organization seeking to become a national political party." They also distanced themselves from figures and movements that "for years controlled the decisions" of the PRD.
"We distance ourselves from right-wing parties, from past leaders, and from any attempt to build a new party based on personal interests," they emphasized.
Another agreement was to launch an open call to PRD members, supporters, and historical leaders to reunite around the party's original principles: "social justice, democracy, defense of citizens' rights, and commitment to popular causes."
They added: "We call for a reunion with all PRD members across the country, who at some point distanced themselves, to rebuild together a clean, honest movement faithful to social causes."
Local PRD members said this step seeks to "reaffirm their ideological and political identity, recover their role in the Mexican left, and build an alternative that, from the states, once again has a national voice and presence."
The leaders who made this statement are Nora Arias Contreras from Mexico City, Octavio Ocampo Cordova from Michoacan, Evodio Velázquez Aguirre from Guerrero, Sergio Prado from Morelos, Manuel Cambrón from Tlaxcala, Néstor Santacruz from Zacatecas, Margarita Ramos from Hidalgo, and Tomás Basaldú from Oaxaca.
