MEXICO CITY (apro) .- After the Cuauhtémoc Training Ship collided with the Brooklyn Bridge in New York, 22 crew members were injured, 11 are diagnosed as critically ill and nine are reported to be stable; two died.

According to the Navy, during the sailing maneuvers of the Cuauhtémoc sailing vessel in New York, United States, a mishap occurred with the Brooklyn Bridge, causing damage to the training ship.

Following the incident, President Claudia Sheinbaum issued a statement on her social media account, expressing her regret over the deaths and solidarity with the families of those affected.

"We are deeply saddened by the passing of two crew members of the Training Ship Cuauhtémoc, who lost their lives in the unfortunate accident in the port of New York. Our sympathy and support go out to their families."

The president also mentioned the work being done by the Navy, the Mexican ambassador to the United States, and staff from the Mexican Consulate General in New York in support of the crew. Sheinbaum also thanked New York Mayor Eric Adams for "all the support provided to our fellow citizens."

For its part, the Navy reported that it is coordinating efforts to keep the families of the deceased, as well as the crew members and the rest of the cadets, informed while they carry out the necessary procedures to "reunite the cadets with their families as soon as possible so they can continue their academic semester."
