Sankowski: The IDEAS Institute has submitted grant applications for over PLN 50 million

Over the past six months, the IDEAS Research Institute has submitted grant applications for over PLN 50 million, and 13 research groups and teams have been established, according to a post by the Institute's head, Prof. Piotr Sankowski, on the X platform.
Sankowski, via the X platform, announced that he was appointed director of the IDEAS Research Institute on Friday; he had served as acting director for the past six months. He also summarized the institute's activities over the past six months.
As Sankowski reported, during this time, they managed to establish 13 research groups and teams, establish cooperation on artificial intelligence projects with representatives of offices, and submit grant applications for over PLN 50 million.
Sankowski added that the ELLIS Unit has been relocated to the IDEAS Research Institute. The ELLIS Doctoral Symposium was also successfully organized, with over 170 guests from around the world attending.
“I hope that we will make the IDEAS Institute a leading European institution in the field of AI,” he emphasized.
The IDEAS Research Institute is a research institution under the authority of two ministers: Digital Affairs and National Defense, operating in the field of artificial intelligence. It conducts research and development work in the field of artificial intelligence, integrates and supports research groups and scientific initiatives, and collaborates with businesses.
The Institute's scientists are expected to focus on research in artificial intelligence, machine vision, computer graphics, and natural language processing, with particular emphasis on solutions for security, defense, public administration, and "green cities." The Institute's research agendas are to be regularly assessed by the Scientific Council.
At the end of February, the government adopted a regulation establishing the IDEAS Research Institute. In April, the Institute was entered into the National Court Register, and Sankowski indicated that this meant the entity could begin operating.
The establishment of the IDEAS Research Institute was announced by the Ministries of Digital Affairs and Science and Higher Education in October of last year. According to the plans at the time, the Institute was to begin operations on January 1, 2025. It was announced at the time that its creation would be led by Professor Sankowski, who previously founded and headed the NCBR's IDEAS center (from 2021 to 2024). He resigned from his position in October of last year after being rejected as president of the center.
Piotr Sankowski is a computer scientist, a postdoctoral fellow in mathematics, a professor at the Institute of Computer Science at the Faculty of Mathematics, Informatics and Mechanics of the University of Warsaw, and – as the only scientist from Poland – a four-time recipient of European Research Council grants.
