The Upper Silesian Children's Health Center is conducting free screening tests for type 1 diabetes for children and adolescents. Approximately 300 patients have participated so far, said Wojciech Gumułka, the center's spokesman, on Friday.

The program aims to detect the disease before its first symptoms appear. The test involves a single finger prick, which allows for the detection of autoimmune markers that indicate an increased risk of developing type 1 diabetes. Children and adolescents aged 2 to 17 are screened.

“Early identification of an impending disease allows the patient to live longer without the need to administer insulin,” explained Professor Przemysław Jarosz-Chobot, head of the pediatric diabetology and pediatrics department at the Upper Silesian Children’s Health Center, in a press release.

She emphasized that approximately 40% of children arrive at the Upper Silesian Children's Health Center already in a state of ketoacidosis. "This poses a real threat to health and life, as well as very serious complications in the future," said Professor Przemysław Jarosz-Chobot. She noted that this can be avoided with early diagnosis.

Type 1 diabetes is a chronic disease characterized by elevated blood glucose levels. It's usually diagnosed in childhood. A person with type 1 diabetes doesn't produce enough of the hormone insulin, or none at all. This differs from the much more common type 2 diabetes, in which people can still produce insulin, but their cells stop responding to it.

The Upper Silesian Children's Health Center conducts screening tests in Chorzów, Katowice, and Ruda Slaska. Applications are accepted via an online form: www.sprawdzcukrzyce.sum.edu.pl . This is part of the pan-European EDENT1FI project. (PAP)
