MediaCon meetings discuss the future of journalism in October

The MediaCon meetings propose to discuss the future of journalism on October 10th and 11th, at the Goethe-Institut, in Lisbon.
The 2nd edition of the initiative will feature debates, conversations, masterclasses and sessions in the Pecha Kucha format (a concise presentation where the speaker displays 20 images, each for 20 seconds).
To jointly think about “the journalism we want”, there will also be a Media Fair, with publications from various independent journalism projects, says the Goethe-Institut, which organizes the meetings, together with the media outlets 7Margens, CCA — Comunidade Cultura e Arte, Gerador, Médio Tejo, Mensagem de Lisboa, Projecto Inocência, RIA, Rimas & Batidas and Shifter & LPP, in partnership with Europa Criativa Portugal and the Friedrich Ebert Foundation in Portugal.
MediaCon kicks off on the 10th, at 10:00 am, with a masterclass by Joana Lobo Antunes on science communication, aimed primarily at journalists and journalism students.
This will be followed at 11:30 a.m. by a talk on research grants and support for journalism, and at 2:00 p.m. by a masterclass on cross-border journalism, by Paulo Pena, who is part of the Investigate Europe international team.
Joana Guerra Tadeu, Gonçalo Taborda, Patrícia Barnabé and Catarina Carvalho will reflect, at 5:00 pm, on content creation and access to information.
At 7:00 pm, Marc Engelhardt, director of the collaborative journalism platform Correctiv (Switzerland), Vania Baldi, Italian professor and researcher at Iscte, and Joana Gorjão Henriques, journalist at the Portuguese daily Público, will discuss how technology has paved the way for populism in journalism.
The following day, at the same time, the conversation will focus on media literacy and fact-checking, bringing together Alba Tobella (Verificat), Mariana Ochs (EducaMídia), Marta G. Franco (Laintersección) and Margarida Maneta (Universidade Lusófona, CICANT).
“The state of cultural criticism in the current panorama” is the theme of the conversation scheduled for the 11th, at 11:30 am, with the participation of Cláudia Lucas Chéu, Filipa Vaz Teixeira and José Teixeira.
A masterclass and two talks are scheduled for the afternoon of the second day of meetings.
At 2:00 p.m., Isabel Marques, director of information at RIA — Rádio Universitária de Aveiro, will explain how a university radio newsroom works.
At 3 pm, Pedro Jerónimo (LabCom), Nuno Francisco (Jornal do Fundão) and Patrícia Fonseca (MedioTejo) will reflect on regional journalism, followed by a debate at 5 pm with photographers Bárbara Monteiro (Narrative) and Vera Marmelo on the role of photography in creating narratives.
With free entry (although certain activities require prior registration) , the MediaCon journalism meetings aim to promote reflection on the role of journalism in the current context and delve deeper into specific topics, such as cultural criticism, cross-border journalism or science communication.
