Artificial intelligence is feared due to Hollywood effect

Artificial intelligence is feared due to Hollywood effect

Published: 24.02.2025 - 17:15

Zafer Küçükşabanoğlu, President of the Artificial Intelligence Policies Association (AIPA), made statements regarding his presentations at the TBMM Artificial Intelligence Research Commission.

Emphasizing that they aim to accelerate Turkey's goal of becoming one of the top 10 economies in the world through technology entrepreneurship, and to create, support and spread a new entrepreneurship culture, Küçükşabanoğlu said that they encourage studies on artificial intelligence and provide financial and moral support to individuals conducting undergraduate and graduate studies in line with the necessary criteria.

Expressing that the artificial intelligence economy will create an economic volume of approximately 15.7 trillion dollars by 2030, Küçükşabanoğlu said that artificial intelligence will cause a loss of 85 million jobs worldwide and provide 97 million new jobs during the said period.

WE ARE 53RD OUT OF 188 COUNTRIES IN ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE PREPARATION

Küçükşabanoğlu reported that Turkey, which ranks 53rd among 188 countries in Oxford Insights' 2024 "Artificial Intelligence Readiness Index," is also ranked 50th in the "Country Artificial Intelligence Readiness Index" prepared by the IMF.

Sharing the results of their research on "artificial intelligence" as AIPA, Küçükşabanoğlu said, "Society cannot define artificial intelligence correctly. While 22.6 percent of the participants stated that they 'did not have an idea' about artificial intelligence, 21.1 percent saw the 'Hollywood effect'. This effect created by the image of artificial intelligence drawn in Hollywood movies is imprinted in the minds as taking over the world, destroying it, causing harm and doing this with robotic hands. Society is afraid of artificial intelligence. The level of fear of artificial intelligence is 21.9 percent. The highest rate of reason for fear (13.9 percent) is employment."

Küçükşabanoğlu stated that 47 percent of those who participated in the research had a positive view of artificial intelligence technologies, 27.9 percent had a negative view, and 25.1 percent were undecided.

"Its positive impact is mostly seen in two areas. The first of these is the content recommendation algorithms, in other words personalized content applications, that platforms like YouTube, Instagram and TikTok use to ensure that users spend more time. The second is that the language barrier is eliminated in social media and web news, making global information easier to access. The negative impact is that artificial intelligence is used to spread fake news and false information, and this content is sometimes presented as real. These statements are also grouped under the headings of disinformation and manipulation."

"The employment scale has not changed for now"

Küçükşabanoğlu, who stated that businesses investing in artificial intelligence need technical and qualified personnel to develop these technologies and integrate them into their own business processes, said, "When we analyzed the employment change of businesses using artificial intelligence in 2023, we observed that 65.5 percent of them had no change in their employment, 25.9 percent had an increase in their employment, and 8.6 percent had a decrease in their employment. We see that the balance in total employment has not been disrupted for now. However, it is also obvious that professionals need to gain artificial intelligence competencies in order for this balance not to be disrupted in the coming years."

Küçükşabanoğlu, who also touched on the individual use of artificial intelligence by employees in businesses, despite the fact that businesses do not use artificial intelligence, said, "The individual use of artificial intelligence by employees is defined as 'shadow artificial intelligence'. The rate of artificial intelligence use in the Turkish business ecosystem with shadow artificial intelligence use is at the level of 25 percent. 7.5 percent is encountered due to the individual use of professionals, although not institutionally. Although this situation seems good, it contains serious regulatory and security risks in itself. In order to prevent such dangers, institutions and employees should adapt technically with the training they will receive."

Security risks

Stating that artificial intelligence systems have become an indispensable part of life and are widely used in many critical areas from banking to health, from transportation to security, Küçükşabanoğlu drew attention to the fact that this widespread use also brings with it significant security risks.

Listing the attacks in the field of artificial intelligence under the titles of "model theft", "data extraction", "hidden triggers", "dual-purpose queries", Küçükşabanoğlu stated that they submitted a report to the TBMM Artificial Intelligence Research Commission, which included their suggestions in this field.
