IMEI registration fee exceeds 31 thousand liras: Market shrank by 82 percent in a year
The Information Technologies and Communication Authority (BTK) published its activity report. It showed that the mobile device market in Türkiye will shrink in 2024. While the number of phones brought from abroad decreased by 82 percent, sales in the domestic market also decreased.
The IMEI registration fee exceeding 31 thousand liras has eliminated the citizens' choice of abroad. In addition, the decrease in domestic production and import figures showed that consumers have difficulty in accessing new devices.
DROPPED 82 PERCENT IN ONE YEARBTK data showed a sharp decline of approximately 82 percent in one year. The number of devices with IMEI registration, which was 892,501 in 2023, was recorded as 161,136 in 2024. This sharp decline was parallel to the IMEI registration fee increasing to 31,692 TL in 2024.
DOMESTIC MARKET IS STABLEWhile the number of devices brought from abroad decreased, the expected activity was not seen in the domestic market. While the number of devices registered with IMEI was at the level of 16 million 692 thousand 189 in 2023, this figure decreased to 15 million 629 thousand 448 in 2024.
The number of devices registered in Türkiye decreased from 6 million 887 thousand to 6 million 214 thousand compared to the previous year. The total number of registered smartphones in 2024 was 11 million 299 thousand.
APPLE INCREASED, SAMSUNG AND REDM DECREASEDWhen looking at BTK's brand-based data on IMEI records, registrations for Samsung and Redmi branded devices decreased, while registrations for Apple branded devices increased.
While the number of registered devices in Samsung decreased from 3 million 639 thousand to 3 million 178 thousand, in Redmi decreased from 1 million 832 thousand to 1 million 796 thousand, the number of registered devices in Apple increased from 3 million 181 thousand to 3 million 287 thousand.
