Microsoft is rolling out OpenAI's new model to Windows

OpenAI has released this new gpt-oss-20b model for Windows. It's expected to be available on macOS soon, so you'll need a laptop with at least 16GB of VRAM to use it.

The gpt-oss-20b model is optimized for code execution and tool use. Microsoft emphasizes that it's "perfect for building autonomous assistants or embedding AI into real-world workflows, even in bandwidth-constrained environments."

Microsoft has pre-optimized gpt-oss-20b, which suggests support for more devices will be coming soon.

OPENAI ANNOUNCED ITS NEW MODELS

OpenAI has released gpt-oss-120b and gpt-oss-20b, two open-source language models that offer powerful real-world performance at low cost.

These models, released under the flexible Apache 2.0 license, reportedly outperform similarly sized open-source models on reasoning tasks and demonstrate strong tooling capabilities. They are also optimized for efficient deployment on consumer hardware.

These models were trained using a mix of reinforcement learning and techniques from OpenAI's most advanced internal models, including o3 and other leading systems.
