Phone number requirement is being removed from WhatsApp!

Popular messaging app WhatsApp is preparing to launch its long-awaited "username" feature. The company has begun testing a username reservation system in its iOS beta. This feature will allow users to secure their desired usernames before the feature is fully rolled out.
The system, currently being tested with iOS beta users only, will be rolled out to all users soon. During the early access phase, users will be able to reserve their chosen usernames in advance.
This system is expected to be integrated into the Android version soon. WhatsApp aims to make usernames a symbol of personal identity, similar to those on other social media platforms.
The rules have been announcedWith the new feature, WhatsApp has also introduced a set of rules for choosing usernames. The rules are as follows:
- Usernames must be at least 3 and at most 30 characters long.
- No characters other than letters, numbers, periods (.) and underscores (_) can be used in names.
- The company will block fake or misleading usernames from the system.
These rules will be implemented to prevent fake accounts and protect identity security.
PHONE NUMBER REQUIREMENT IS BEING REMOVEDWith this feature, WhatsApp is also making a significant change to the app's core identity infrastructure. Having previously used a completely phone number-based structure, the platform aims to increase privacy and security by switching to a username-based system.
This will allow users to communicate with anyone they choose without sharing their phone number. Experts believe this will be one of the most significant updates that will bring WhatsApp on par with other messaging platforms.
