You have less than a month left until your Instagram photos and videos can appear on Google: how to avoid it

You have less than a month left until your Instagram photos and videos can appear on Google: how to avoid it

Instagram has announced that, starting July 10, 2025, your content may be visible on Google and other search engines . This means that the photos and videos you upload publicly could appear in the Mountain View company's search engine results, as well as others like Bing.

Below, we'll explain what this measure entails and how it affects you , but the good news is that there are solutions you can apply if you don't want this to happen.

What Instagram's new measure means

What all this means is that people will be able to discover your content outside of Meta's social network , as it will be indexed in Google and Bing search engines. Last April, Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri stated that they were working to ensure "creators' content on Instagram appears in search results on Google and other search engines."

As explained in their help blog , search engine indexing is the process of organizing and storing internet information so that third-party search engines can quickly and efficiently find it when you search for something. That is, public content you upload to Instagram will be visible on Google and other search engines, making it easier to find information.

In short, until now, what you post on Instagram is only visible within the app, but with this measure, your content could be visible outside of it, and other people will be able to find it without needing an account on the app and discover what you upload . The good news is that not all Instagram accounts will be affected.

It doesn't affect everyone who has Instagram.

This decision will only affect accounts that are set to professional, public, and the owner is over 18 years old . It will also only apply if that person clicked the "Accept" button in the informational message that appears in the app. So, if your account is private, personal, and you're a minor, you don't have to worry.

But, as we mentioned before, if you meet all the requirements and don't want your photos, videos, and reels to be displayed in search engines, there is a solution you can use. To disable indexing of your Instagram photos and videos in search engines like Google, Bing, and others, you'll need to do the following:

  1. Open the Instagram app and go to your profile.
  2. Tap the drop-down menu to access "Settings & Activity."
  3. Look for the "Who can see your content" section.
  4. Go to "Account Privacy".
  5. You'll see the option: "Allow public photos and videos to appear in search engine results."
  6. Make sure the button on the right is disabled.

When you do this, links to your content may still be shared publicly, but photos and videos will no longer be indexed in search engines . Another simpler solution is to change your account from professional to personal, or from public to private.
