Apple ordered to pay $93 million to a Spanish company for infringing its patents.

A federal jury ruling in Delaware (USA) has ordered technology giant Apple to pay more than $110 million (more than €93 million) to Madrid-based company TOT Power Control for infringing its patent related to wireless communications technology.
Last week, a judge ruled in favor of TOT Power Control's claims that the wireless chips in Apple's iPhones, iPads, and Apple Watches violated TOT's patent rights on technology used in the 3G wireless standard, Reuters reports.
TOT Power Control is a Spanish company dedicated to developing technology to improve energy efficiency in mobile communications. In 2021, the company accused Apple of copying its system for managing "how power is used to respond to decreases and increases in the ratio of radio signal to interference."
TOT's lawsuit claimed that Apple's mobile devices include transceivers that use its patented technology without a license. Now, a US court has ruled in favor of the Spanish company, ordering it to pay more than €93 million , even though the jury found that Apple had infringed one of the two TOT patents in dispute.
An Apple spokesperson said the company was disappointed with the verdict and plans to appeal, and it may not be the only tech company to do so. This is because TOT has filed similar lawsuits against mobile device makers LG and Samsung in Delaware that are still pending.
