As reported by the Novosvyat portal, researchers from the University of Otago (New Zealand) have identified five countries that have a chance to maintain agricultural production even if a nuclear winter occurs.

According to Novosvyat, a study published in the journal Risk Analysis states that a potential nuclear standoff between NATO and Russia could release about 150 teragrams of soot into the atmosphere. This would cause a significant reduction in sunlight and a drop in temperatures, which would lead to the collapse of global agriculture. It is expected that global food production would fall by 80%, and this situation could persist for several years.

According to the researchers’ calculations, countries located in the Northern Hemisphere will face a complete loss of agricultural opportunities. However, four countries in the Southern Hemisphere – New Zealand, Vanuatu, Australia and the Solomon Islands – due to their geographical location and island specificity will be able to continue farming even in the conditions of a nuclear winter.
