The largest metropolitan areas in the United States, with a population of 34 million, are facing a dangerous process of land subsidence. According to a study by Virginia Tech University, published in the journal Nature Cities, at least 20% of the territory in 28 cities is gradually sinking due to excessive extraction of groundwater.
Scientists say the main reason for subsidence (soil subsidence) is the intensive use of underground water. When aquifers are emptied faster than they are replenished, the soil begins to shrink. In 80% of cases, this process is associated with human activity. On the West Coast, an additional factor is tectonic activity, and on the East Coast, the consequences of melting ancient glaciers.
Houston is recognized as the fastest sinking city, with 42% of its territory sinking at a rate of more than 5 mm per year. Dallas, Chicago, New York and Detroit are also at risk, with subsidence affecting up to 98% of the area.
Although the process appears slow, its cumulative effect threatens the infrastructure and safety of millions of residents.
