On Sunday, June 1, a plasma cloud from the largest solar ejection this year will reach Earth, scientists from the Solar Astronomy Laboratory of the Space Research Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Institute of Solar-Terrestrial Physics of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences report. According to experts' calculations, the plasma is moving at a record speed of about 1,200 km/s and will reach our planet at about 16:00 Moscow time.
This phenomenon is expected to cause a powerful magnetic storm of level G4, which can lead to serious disruptions in radio communications, satellite systems and navigation. A unique feature of the upcoming event will be the possibility of observing polar lights even in tropical latitudes. An accurate forecast of the magnetic storm's strength will be published later.
"Calculations confirm the exceptionally high speed of the plasma, about 1.2 thousand km/s. It will take the plasma only about 37 hours to cover the distance of 150 million km separating the Earth and the Sun. The preliminary arrival of the gas cloud to the Earth is expected on June 1 at about 16:00 Moscow time," the report says.
Earlier, Muscovites were told about the weather for the coming week.
