iOS 26 will turn off the camera when it detects nudity

iOS 26 will turn off the camera when it detects nudity

When nudity is detected while using FaceTime, the camera automatically freezes and a warning message appears on the screen saying, "You may be showing something sensitive. If you feel uncomfortable, you should end the call." The screen also offers the user two options: continue the call or end the call.

Apple announced in June that it would strengthen family controls and tools to protect children online with iOS 26. Indeed, some information was also made that the company would be keeping things tighter, especially in terms of parental controls.

This nudity detection feature is also offered directly to users in this context. The main purpose of the feature is to prevent users, especially those underage, from encountering unwanted content. However, there are still question marks about what exactly the system perceives as "nudity". For example, whether an outfit that reveals a body shape or an ordinary moment of changing clothes can be perceived as sensitive by the system, these details are not known for now.

This new security tool works with machine learning algorithms that work within the device itself. Apple specifically emphasizes that this system is processed entirely within the device and that no access is provided to FaceTime calls, which are encrypted end-to-end. In other words, there will be no image or data transmission to Apple servers.

While the feature appeared to be disabled in the iOS 26 developer beta, some users have reported that the feature is still active despite being disabled. This is thought to be due to a software bug. It is thought that the default settings vary by age; the feature is likely to be automatically enabled for accounts under the age of 18 and disabled for adult accounts.

On the other hand, this feature has started to create controversy, especially among adult users who have private conversations. Some users are concerned that their privacy may be violated. Although Apple says they do not access content, issues where boundaries are unclear, such as nudity detection, can disrupt the user experience with false perceptions.
