PS5 sales exceed 80 million

Sony has released its financial results for the fiscal quarter ending June 30, 2025, announcing that total worldwide shipments of the PlayStation 5 reached 80.3 million units. It was reported that 2.5 million PS5s were shipped during the quarter, representing an increase of 100,000 units compared to the same period last year.
Sony's software, or game sales, for its PS5 and PS4 consoles also saw impressive growth. A total of 65.9 million games were sold during the quarter, representing a 12.3 million-year increase. Digital downloads accounted for 83% of sales, while Sony's first-party games accounted for approximately 6.9 million units, a slight increase compared to the same period last year.
PlayStation Network monthly active users also increased, rising from 116 million last year to 123 million this quarter. Sony, which had a strong quarter for both hardware and digital services, is nevertheless cautious due to global economic uncertainties and potential tariffs. The company estimates that these external pressures could result in a loss of operating revenue of up to ¥ 100 billion. Therefore, potential price increases for the PS5 are also on the agenda.
Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Hiroki Totoki previously stated that they were considering the idea of manufacturing consoles in the US. Trump's tax stance on devices imported from abroad, in particular, is causing Sony, as it is for all other companies, to worry. However, no concrete developments have been released on this matter yet. It appears the company's path forward in terms of both production and distribution strategies will become clearer in the coming quarters.
