WhatsApp will warn you about groups suspected of being scammed

WhatsApp will warn you about groups suspected of being scammed

WhatsApp has announced a new security feature designed to protect users from scams. The app will now notify you with a pop-up alert when someone not in your contact list adds you to a new group chat. This move is aimed at preventing messaging scams, particularly those involving fake group chats.

The new security window will provide basic information about the group. This alert will include details such as the total number of members in the group, whether there are other members in your contact list, and the time the chat was started. It will also remind users of some basic tips to protect themselves from scams. Users will have the option to simply leave this window without opening the chat or to review the group content and decide to continue.

WhatsApp stated that it is testing these types of alerts for direct one-to-one messages and continues to develop new methods to combat scammers. It is working on preventative measures, particularly against scenarios where scammers make initial contact on a platform other than WhatsApp and then transfer the chat to the app.

In addition to all these improvements, the company is also actively combating fake accounts it detects within the app. WhatsApp announced that it permanently blocked more than 6.8 million accounts identified as engaging in fraudulent activity in the first half of 2025 alone.

The rise in digital scams, particularly on social media and messaging apps, has become a problem repeatedly reported by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). WhatsApp's new security measures aim to keep users more aware and safe from this threat.
